An exhibition at the Roeliff Jansen Historical Society, “Revived in Wood: Greek and Gothic Revival Churches” will run July through October. On 15 August at 2 pm, Dale Peterson will talk on Richard Upjohn, renowned architect of St John in the Wilderness, followed by a tour of the exhibition. What have we missed during the pandemic? Adam Grant says it might be collective effervescence, that feeling of shared euphoria that we sometimes find in church. Emile Durkheim identified the experience in his pioneering study of religious life (1915). Louise and Dale Peterson have published a new Voice in the Wilderness. Fr John’s essay relates Plato’s story of the Cave to respect for reality, however challenging, and the dangers of denial.
